What No One Tells You About Wedding Dress Shopping

Honest answers to the questions every bride is actually asking.

After working with hundreds of brides here in Charlotte, we have noticed something: the questions brides ask before their first appointment are almost always the same ones. How many dresses should I try? Do I need a budget before I come in? What if my family hates what I love?

These are great questions. And they deserve real answers before dress shopping. So we put together this guide with the kind of honesty we wish every bride walked in the door already knowing, whether you book with us or any Charlotte bridal boutique.

How many bridal appointments should I book before making a decision?

Most brides find their dress within two or three appointments. After that, decision fatigue sets in and every gown starts to blur together. We recommend starting with one strong appointment at a boutique that carries a wide range of designers, going in with an open mind, and seeing what actually makes you feel something. You can always book a second appointment to revisit a top contender. What you want to avoid is booking five boutiques on the same weekend before you have any sense of what you are looking for.

Should I have a budget in mind before I go shopping?

Yes, and be honest about it. A good stylist will respect your number and work within it. At J. Major's, our gowns start around $1,200 and go up to $6,500, and we can almost always find something stunning at every point in that range. The risk of not sharing a budget is that you fall in love with a dress that is out of reach, which makes the rest of the appointment harder than it needs to be.

What if my family hates the dress I love while dress shopping?

This is one of the most common things we hear. Here is our honest take: the people you bring to your appointment matter. Invite the voices you genuinely trust, not everyone who wants to be included. And if you find a dress that makes you light up but your mom is on the fence, that is worth a real conversation. If a dress makes YOU feel like yourself on one of the most photographed days of your life, that is not a small thing.

"If a bridal shop will not give you time to sleep on a decision, they do not have your best interest in mind. A dress you feel certain about on day two is worth more than one you feel pressured into on day one."

How far in advance do I need to order my wedding dress?

Most designer gowns take four to six months to produce, and then you need time for alterations. If your wedding is in Charlotte and you are looking at a peak Saturday in spring or fall, we generally recommend starting your shopping nine to twelve months out. If you are working with a shorter timeline, do not panic. Rush orders are often available, and some styles can be sourced much faster than that. Just be upfront with your boutique from the start so they can work with what you have.

Do I need to have a vision before my appointment?

Not at all. Some of our favorite appointments start with "I have no idea what I want." That is actually a wonderful place to be because it means you come in without having already ruled out a hundred things. Your stylist's job is to listen, ask the right questions, and pull dresses based on what she hears. You do not need a Pinterest board to walk through our door. You just need to show up open.

What sizes do bridal samples typically come in, and what if I am not that size?

This is an important one. A lot of Charlotte bridal boutiques carry samples in a very narrow size range, which can make the appointment feel discouraging if you fall outside of it. At J. Major's, we carry in-store samples from size 6 to 28, and we can special order up to a size 32. We want every bride to actually be able to try on dresses, not just look at them on a hanger and imagine. If size-inclusive shopping matters to you, ask about sample ranges before you book anywhere.

A few things worth knowing before you book anywhere

Not all bridal shops operate the same way. Some are high-volume and move quickly. Others, like us, take a more personal approach because we believe the experience of finding your dress is just as important as the dress itself.

When you are evaluating a Charlotte bridal shop, ask whether your appointment will be one-on-one or shared with other brides. Ask who will be helping you and what their background is. At J. Major's, our co-owner Madison is on the floor for every appointment because she is also our buyer and designer, and she genuinely believes that being present with brides is the only way to truly understand what women are looking for. That is not common in this industry, and it shows in the experience.

Ask about the pressure. A great boutique will give you the space to feel something, process it, and come back. If a bridal shop makes you feel like the deal disappears the moment you walk out the door, pay attention to that. A confident boutique stands behind its dresses because it knows they are worth coming back for.

And finally, ask whether they carry designers you cannot find everywhere. The best bridal shopping experience is one where you see something you could not have found on your own.

We hope this helps you feel a little more prepared and a little less overwhelmed. If you are looking for a bridal boutique in Charlotte that will take the time to actually know you, we would love to meet you.
