At J. Major’s Bridal Boutique in Charlotte, we’ve guided thousands of brides through their journey from “yes” to “I do.” After helping with fittings, steaming, timelines, and even last-minute calm-the-nerves moments, we’ve learned that there are a few questions almost every bride asks about her wedding day.

Here are the most frequently asked questions, answered by our team, so you can feel prepared, confident, and ready to soak in every second of your day.

1. How should I store and transport my wedding gown before the ceremony?

We recommend keeping your gown in its breathable garment bag until the morning of your wedding. If you’re traveling, lay the bag flat in the backseat or across the top of luggage, not crammed in a trunk. For destination weddings, call your airline ahead of time; many offer closet space in first-class cabins for bridal gowns.

2. Who should help me get into my gown?

Choose two trusted people often your maid of honor and mom. Too many hands can make things stressful. Make sure at least one helper has been to your final fitting so they know how your dress fastens, how to fluff the train, and how to secure the bustle.

3. Should I steam or press my gown the morning of?

Yes, but do it carefully. Light steaming is safest, especially for tulle, satin, and crepe fabrics. If your venue has a steamer, confirm this in advance. Many brides book a beauty professional or day-of stylist who can also help with last minute touch ups.

4. When should I put my dress on?

Plan to step into your gown about an hour before photos begin. This gives you plenty of time for fastening, bustling practice, final makeup touch-ups, and a calm “reveal” moment.

5. How do I use the restroom in a wedding dress?

Ah, the question every bride thinks about but doesn’t always ask! The easiest trick: face backward on the toilet, it gives your skirt more room. Or, enlist a bridesmaid to help hold layers of fabric. (Some brides even bring a “bathroom buddy” bag or slip designed just for this.)

6. What if something goes wrong with my gown?

Pack a bridal emergency kit: safety pins, fashion tape, a small sewing kit, stain remover wipes, and a mini steamer. At J. Major’s, we also teach our brides how to troubleshoot common issues like a loose bustle loop or sticky zipper.

7. Do I need to practice walking and dancing in my gown?

Absolutely! At your final fitting, we’ll encourage you to sit, walk, hug, and dance. Practice at home in your wedding shoes, too. This makes you feel more natural and prevents surprises like tripping over your hem during the first dance.

8. What’s the best way to keep my dress clean during photos?

Assign a bridesmaid or family member as your “train manager.” They can lift and fluff the dress during outdoor photos. Many brides also bring a clean white sheet or blanket to place under the gown if photos are taken on grass or gravel.

9. Should I eat or drink while in my dress?

Yes, you need energy! Stick to clear liquids (water, champagne, white wine) and finger foods that aren’t too messy. Have a napkin handy and avoid sauces or oils that could stain.

10. What happens to my gown after the wedding?

Many brides bring their gown back to us for professional cleaning and preservation. The sooner the better, within 6 weeks, so stains don’t set. If you want to sell or repurpose your gown later, proper preservation is essential.
